Lintec is a natural, linseed-based feed source, that works to reduce the environmental impact of milk production in two ways. By reducing the amount of methane produced by the cow and by actively increasing milk yield on the same amount of feed, driving feed efficiency and therefore kilos of carbon per litre of milk.

Yield increases come from improved energy intake and the effect on the rumen of lower methane emissions, the reduced risk of acidosis Lintec provides, as well as the control of inflammation in the cow and better reproduction performance (lower days in milk).

How does reduced methane production work?

Lintec inclusion increases the propionic micro-organism population in the rumen, while acetic and butyric micro-organisms decrease. Propionate production emits no carbon dioxide (CO2) and actively consumes hydrogen (H2), and therefore methane (CH4) is reduced.

Trials at Reading University have shown a 10.5% methane decrease per kg of DM of Lintec fed – 7.2% of that decrease is due to the rumen effect and 3.3% decrease is due to the yield effect.

Lintec’s, environmental credentials have been peer reviewed in eight scientific publications across Europe.

Lintec can be included into the diet to help farmers drive performance and improve fertility. We examine three example herds to understand the valuable role Lintec can play.

Fertility

How does Lintec help with cow fertility?

• More energy for the cow.

• Omega-3 and Omega-6 – better bulling activity and recognition by the cow she is preganant.

• Reduction in inflammation means the cow recovers faster after calving.

• The benefit of lignans, which come from the husk of the linseed plant. The have powerful antioxidant activity and phytoestrogenic properties which help with the natural hormone balance of the cow.

Example herd 1

• 125 cows

• All-year-round calving, robotic herd

• Average yield per cow of 10,000 litres

• Herd started using Optima Lintec in January 24

• Bulling improved

• Methane reduced

• Milk production was lifted

How does Lintec help with cow performance?

• Stable rumen pH reduces the risk of acidosis.

• Rick in Omega-3 which is anti-inflammatry.

• This means a better balance between Omega-6 and Omega-3 for the cow helping to support immunity.

• Less metritis and udder oedemas.

• Reduced mortality.

Example herd 2

• 450 cows

• All-year-round calving, high yielding group

• Average yield of 8,500 litres/cow

• Grass silage-based diet

• High group fed Lintec

• Improved body condition

• Better health, less acidosis

Example herd 3

• 180 cows

• Tight autumn block calving herd

• Average yield of 8,600 litres per cow

• Lintec fed to fresh calved group

• Supports fertility

• Energy boost supports peak production and body conditions

• Helps maintain tight calving block
