Keep your smallholding clean and tidy

Minimising food sources and hiding places for rodents will make your smallholding much less inviting to rodent visitors. Always clean up any spilled feed and keep on top of any rubbish ensuring it is thrown away promptly.

Good Husbandry

Keep feeders and drinkers or troughs clean and well-maintained, and avoid overfeeding to avoid spillage. Store hay, straw and other bedding in dry, well-ventilated areas to prevent mould growth, which can attract rodents.

Secure Feed Storage

Store feed in secure, rodent-proof containers to prevent contamination and loss. Invest in sturdy plastic or metal bins with tight-fitting lids and elevate them off the ground to make it more difficult for rodents to access them.

Regular Inspections

Conduct regular inspections of your property, paying close attention to areas where rodents are likely to nest, such as feed storage areas, barns, and outbuildings. Look for signs of rodent activity, including droppings, bite marks and shredded materials.

Target Entry Points

Fill gaps or cracks in buildings, walls, and doors to prevent rodents from getting in. Use durable materials like wire mesh or steel wool to block entry points.

Use Traps and Baits

Seek advice on traps and baits if you need to control rodent populations. Any bait or poison must be used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and kept out of the reach of livestock, pets and children.

As with many problems, prevention is better than a cure! Taking steps to discourage rats and mice from setting up home on your smallholding will pay dividends.
